WOODCHESTER VALLEY VINEYARD

The Stroud Valleys might not be your first thought when it comes to English wines but a visit to this boutique vineyard in the heart of the Five Valleys will soon change your mind. In fact, when Fiona and Neil Shire first planted the vineyard in 2007, their research showed them that wine had been made in the area for centuries, even possibly dating back to the Roman era.

As it happens, the steep valley sides are prefect for soil drainage, the hillsides are sheltered from much of the inclement weather of the British Isles, and the free-draining Cotswolds brash is loved by grape vines.

Today, the vineyard has 56 acres under vine, producing an award-winning range of white, rosé, red and sparkling wines. Many of these are made from cool-weather grape varieties such as Bacchus and Seyval Blanc, while the sparkling wines are made from blends of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. The vineyard has even produced a couple of rather exceptional reds, and a sell-out Sauvignon Blanc, one of the only vineyards in the UK to use this mainstream, popular grape.
